Video Capture WDM Driver Does Not Work in Windows 98

ID: Q192112

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Programs that use the Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 (VFW) interface cannot directly communicate with analog video capture devices that use the Windows Driver Model (WDM) video capture interfaces in Windows 98. Such analog capture devices may include PCI adapters with video decoder chips that use WDM drivers.

CAUSE

The VFW WDM Mapper files included with Windows 98 do not allow WDM-based analog capture devices to be used with the VFW 1.1 interface.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Technical Support to obtain the fix. If you are not severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next service pack that contains this fix.

For a complete list of Microsoft Technical Support phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

This fix should have the following file attributes (or later):

File name Version Date Time Size
   -----------------------------------------------------
   Vfwwdm.drv 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:35pm 15,344 bytes
   Vfwwdm.dll 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:38pm 56,832 bytes
   Kswdmcap.ax 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:29pm 51,712 bytes

NOTE: If you contact Microsoft to obtain this fix, a fee may be charged. This fee is refundable if it is determined that you only require the fix you requested. However, this fee is non-refundable if you request additional technical support, if your no-charge technical support period has expired, or if you are not eligible for standard no-charge technical support.

For more information about eligibility for no-charge technical support, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.

MORE INFORMATION

The following text appears in the "Video Capture Devices" section of the Hardware.txt file included with Windows 98. This file is located in the Windows folder after Windows 98 is installed.

Windows Device Manager Video Capture Devices
and Video for Windows Applications
--------------------------------------------

Applications that use the Video for Windows 1.1 (VFW) interfaces also use drivers that conform to the VfW 1.1 driver interfaces. However, with the new Windows Device Manager (WDM) video capture interfaces in Windows 98, applications can no longer use the VfW interfaces to directly communicate with these WDM-based devices. Windows 98 includes a software layer that translates VfW 1.1 interfaces into WDM video capture interfaces. This translation software works only for video capture devices on external busses (USB and 1394) in Windows 98. Analog capture devices (such as PCI cards with video decoder chips that use WDM drivers) cannot use this translation software. The original VfW drivers for these analog capture devices will continue to work but they cannot be used in combination with the newer WDM drivers. In the future, an updated version of this translation software will be available that allows WDM-based analog capture devices to be used through the VfW 1.1 interfaces.

The VFW translation described in the above text comprises the updated files described in this article, which allows WDM-based analog capture devices to be used with the VFW 1.1 interface.
