Windows NT Dual-Boot Does Not Work After Uninstalling Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Windows 98 from a dual-boot computer with Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstation 4.0, you may be unable to successfully start Windows NT Workstation.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Windows NT Workstation after you upgrade Windows 95 to Windows 98. When you uninstall Windows 98, Setup deletes the Windows NT Boot.ini file. This file is needed by NTLDR to start Windows NT successfully.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk to replace the missing files. For information about using the Windows NT Repair disk, please refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
