SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the WINADMIN utility to remotely administer LAN? Manager servers from a computer running Windows 95, the Windows 95 computer may report the following error message:

Your workstation is setup for an older version of LAN Manager.
For full compatibility, please upgrade by running LAN Manager's
   setup.

Microsoft LAN Manager driver cannot be loaded.

When you attempt to run the WINADMIN setup on Windows 95, the following problem occurs:

ERROR: Cannot run Setup in an MS-DOS shell or Windows MS-DOS
   prompt.

CAUSE

The WINADMIN utility is not compatible with Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, use one of the following:

However, as is true with other Windows versions of the Windows NT Server Tools, many administrative functions are possible. User Manager, for instance, is able to create and delete accounts and to change passwords. Server Manager can start and stop services and create or delete shares, but it is unable to define or change permissions on shares. Event Viewer can read the error log.

Because the client versions of the Server Tools cannot perform every administrative function, and because their use is not recommended or supported by Microsoft, administrators should continue to use WINADMIN with clients prior to Windows 95, use the Server Tools from a computer running Windows NT Server, use the Lan Manager console, or consider upgrading Lan Manager servers to Windows NT.
