Unable to PING Target on the Same Segment

ID: Q180062

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Ping utility to test connectivity between two computers that are on the same network segment, you may receive the following error message:

   Request timed out.

You may receive the above error even though all of the computers on this network segment are configured with proper IP addresses and subnet masks. All other computers may work correctly and the problem computer may be able to lease address information from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server correctly.

CAUSE

The network interface card (NIC) that is installed in this computer is corrupting Internet Control Messaging Protocol (ICMP) packets. A network trace would show that ICMP packets from this computer arrive corrupt at the other computers. The CHECKSUM field in the ICMP header would look similar to the following:

ICMP: Checksum = ERROR: CheckSum is 0x4B5C, Should be 0x8B5C

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you will need to replace the defective NIC.
