When an IP Address Is Deleted from the Computer, Associated Routes May Not Get Deleted

SYMPTOMS

After an IP address is deleted from the computer, it may be impossible to reach some network resources that should still be reachable.


CAUSE

When an IP address is deleted from the computer, subnet routes associated with that address may not get properly cleaned up. This problem can result in a route table with expired entries. The "route print" command can be used to view the route table to verify this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 5.
