Configuring Individual Printers to Passthrough LPR Print Jobs

SUMMARY

Beginning with Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 2, it is possible to configure LPD passthrough on a per-printer basis. Prior to service pack 2, the SimulatePassThrough registry entry affected all incoming LPR jobs to all printers on the server.

Use the following steps to implement LPD passthrough on a per-printer basis:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).


  1. Apply Service Pack 2 or later to the computer running Windows NT version 4.0.


  2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) and go to the following registry location

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control \Print\Printers\<printername>\PrinterDriverData

    where printername is the name of the printer you want to configure.


  3. For Service Pack 2 or 3, on the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following:

    Value Name: SimulatePassThrough
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
    String: 1

    For Service Pack 4 or later, on the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following:

    Value Name: LpdPrinterPassThrough
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
    String: 1


  4. Stop and then restart TCP/IP Print Server and the Spooler service.
