Desktop Icons Are Rearranged After You Install Windows NT Service Pack 4

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) on your computer, all desktop icons are arranged in alphabetical order on the left side of the screen, regardless of their previous location.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs because SP4 enables the desktop icon Auto Arrange feature.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop.


  2. Point to Arrange Icons, and then click Auto Arrange.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
