How to Disable the Shut Down Button on the Logon Information Window

SUMMARY

To provide enhanced workstation security, network administrators may prevent the display of the Shut Down button on the Logon Information window on specific computers by modifying the Windows NT registry.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To enable this feature:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.


  2. Point to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, click the Edit menu, click Find, type in shutdownw, and then click Find Next.


  3. Double-click the ShutdownWithoutLogon value, type 1, and then click OK.


  4. Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
