Err Msg: Logon Failure: User Not Granted the Requested Logon Type

SYMPTOMS

When you try to gain access to resources on a server that has the Microsoft LAN Manager Server EnableSecuritySignature paramter enabled, the following error message may be displayed:

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.


CAUSE

This error message occurs when a user on a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 makes a remote connection to a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4 and the LAN Manager Server EnableSecuritySignature parameter is set to 1. If the logged-on user has an account on the remote computer and the password differs between the two computers, the error message listed above occurs during any access request.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack that contains this fix.
