SUMMARY

HFX is a hotfix manager. It allows you to install, remove, or find information out about hotfixes installed on your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Purpose

The main responsibility of HFX is to make it easy to see what hotfixes are installed on a computer. When you run HFX, it displays products in a drop down box, currently only Windows NT hotfixes are supported, so only one product is listed. More products will be added in the next version of HFX.

For each product selected, a tree lists the service pack installed as well as any hotfixes installed. If a fix was installed with HFX, the files in that fix can be expanded. Also, after selecting a fix, the Properties button can be clicked and it will display who installed it, when it was installed, and information about the original Knowledge Base article in which this hotfix is described.

Usage

To install a hotfix with HFX

A hotfix that has been distributed with HFX, can be installed by first running HFX and then clicking Install. Because the fix exists in the same directory as HFX, it will default to this location. Click OK and the fix will be installed.

To uninstall a hotfix with HFX

First, only hotfixes that were installed with HFX can be uninstalled with HFX. Select the hotfix to be uninstalled, and then click Uninstall. If it can be uninstalled, it will do so; if not, you will get a warning stating that the fix was not originally installed using HFX.

To view information about a fix

Double-click the fix, or select the fix and click Properties. This will display information about when the fix was installed, who installed it, and the Knowledge Base article that is associated with the fix. Again the fix has to be installed with HFX to get this information.

You can also clean up all hotfix information after a service pack or update version is applied with the Clean Up button. This will remove all information for hotfixes that predate the newer service pack.

Support

If you run into any problems, bugs, or suggestions, please report them to Microsoft Support. They will be able to pass the information on to the appropriate people.
