In Page I/O Error Message When Attempting to Install Service Pack 4

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4), Dr. Watson may start and you may receive an error message indicating that a fault occurred in Update.exe because of an in page I/O error (0xC0000006).


CAUSE

During the service pack upgrade, a copy error is encountered because of network problems. Update.exe attempts to page in the Setupapi.dll file from the location of the service pack files, but is unable to do so because of network problems.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the compressed version of the service pack files. When you use these files, the service pack is copied to the local computer in a temporary folder. The Setupapi.dll file is located on the local computer, network problems do not affect service pack installation.
