BUG: Error If SET TALK TO Is Set to a Small Window

SYMPTOMS

When SET TALK TO is set to a window that lacks the vertical width to display the line of text, and an operation is performed that returns status about the operation, FoxPro terminates returning to MS-DOS abnormally.

In addition, sometimes the following error message occurs:

   Transgressed node found during compaction

After you clear the error message, another error message appears:

   Abnormal program termination : Memory protection fault

RESOLUTION

Define a window large enough to contain the status message returned by any operation in the SET TALK window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Type the following code in the command window:

   DEFINE WINDOW idxtalk FROM 8,10 TO 9,70
   ACTIVATE WINDOW idxtalk
   SET TALK WINDOW idxtalk
   USE tutorial\salesman
   INDEX ON salesman TAG salesman

When this code is run, the window is not big enough to display the message. The message "Transgressed node found during compaction" may appear, followed by "Abnormal program termination : memory protection fault." Then FoxPro terminates.
