FIX: System Error Sharing a .DBF on LAN Manager/Workgroups

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft LAN Manager server has a boot drive with FAT format and a database larger than 2000 bytes is stored on the server, the error message "System error...Network error on drive x" is returned on a Microsoft Windows for Workgroups workstation if either of the following conditions exist:

• A LAN Manager workstation accesses the database first, and then a Windows for Workgroups workstation tries to share the same database.

  -or-

• A Windows for Workgroups workstation accesses the database first, and then a second Windows for Workgroups workstation tries to share the same database.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the server incorrectly responds to the Windows for Workgroups request to share the file. The server responds with a message that is too long, resulting in an error from NetBIOS.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in LAN Manager version 2.1a. This problem was corrected in LAN Manager version 2.2B.
