FIX: System Hangs on Startup Under Windows 95 and Low Memory

SYMPTOMS

In Windows 95, when 16-bit applications have been loaded until free physical memory is under 1 MB (the exact amount has not been determined), starting FoxPro may cause the machine to hang.


WORKAROUND

There are two possible workarounds:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Visual FoxPro 3.0 and 3.0b for Windows.

WARNING: Because these steps may cause your machine to hang, it is recommended that you close and save all open files.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Windows 95.


  2. Load the System Monitor for Windows 95 and view Free Memory from the Memory Manager category.


  3. Start loading 16-bit applications until the free memory value in the System Monitor is under 1 MB.


  4. Start FoxPro 2.6a for Windows.
