Running FoxPro for Windows with Windows 3.0

ID: Q99607

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

You can run FoxPro for Windows with Microsoft Windows graphical environment version 3.0; however, there are some limitations associated with running FoxPro with Windows 3.0 instead of Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1, and performance is dependent on the amount of memory, disk space, and system resources.

MORE INFORMATION

Like Windows 3.1, Windows 3.0 must be run in 386 enhanced mode to load FoxPro; therefore, FoxPro runs on machines with 386 or higher processors only.

If you try to run FoxPro in standard mode, the following error message appears:

WATCOM Win386: Not running on a 386 DPMI implementation.
If you try to run FoxPro in real mode, it does not run, and you may experience unpredictable results.

Notes

TrueType fonts are unavailable with Windows 3.0; only system and printer fonts are available. Some error messages and/or button faces may appear formatted with the Symbol font. This is because FoxPro's system fonts are TrueType fonts and they may map incorrectly with Windows 3.0. You can can correct this by reinstalling the video driver, which should reinstall all the system fonts at once.

Object linking and embedding (OLE) is not supported by Windows 3.0. Pictures and other objects may still be pasted into FoxPro using the Paste Special command, but double-clicking them does not open their server applications. Graph FormWizard still works, but it cannot access Microsoft Graph to update graphs; you can create a graph, but you cannot modify it later unless you use Microsoft PaintBrush.
