FP1: CGI URL with Spaces in Operand Not Accepted

ID: Q155294

SYMPTOMS

FrontPage Editor, version 1.1, will not allow a link to a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) Uniform Resource Locator (URL) if the URL has spaces between the arguments.

In the case of a CGI program, the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) parser in FrontPage will recognize the termination of a URL at the question mark, which is a reserved token for CGI parameters. In the case of a standard hyperlink reference (HREF) link, the HTML parser in FrontPage will accept spaces in the URL by automatically surrounding the file name with quotation marks.

WORKAROUND

When you create a link to a CGI program, view the URL in the Link Properties dialog box, and replace each space between arguments with a plus sign.

For example, a link to

   cgi-bin/mycgi.exe?arg1 arg2 arg3
should be written as:

   cgi-bin/mycgi.exe?arg1+arg2+arg3

MORE INFORMATION

Note that some operating systems will not allow spaces in file names; therefore, for optimal cross-platform compatibility, avoid using spaces in file names.
