The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage for the Power Macintosh, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you start FrontPage Editor or FrontPage Explorer, you receive the following message:

Could not make connection to the FrontPage Editor (or FrontPage
Explorer). Please try to start the FrontPage Editor (or FrontPage
   Explorer) from the Finder.

The command could not be completed, because there is not enough memory
available. Closing windows or quitting application programs can make
   more memory available.

WORKAROUND

If you receive this error message, follow these steps:

  1. Check Virtual Memory on the computer. Note that Ram Doubler 1.5 or higher can be used as a Virtual Memory substitute.

  2. Verify that all required components are available. To use Microsoft FrontPage 1.0, you need the following components:

        - A Power PC-based Macintosh computer running at 100 MHz or higher.

        - Apple Macintosh System Software, version 7.5.3 or higher.

        - 16 Megabytes (MB) of RAM if virtual memory is turned on.
Microsoft recommends you have at least 24 MB of RAM.

        - 30 MB of available hard disk space.

  3. Verify that all required FrontPage Extensions and Preferences files exist. You should have the following files installed on your computer:

          Extensions
          ----------

             FP client Library
             FP Convert Library
             FP Extender Library
             FP Image Library
             FP Open Transport
             FP Splash Library
             FP Todo Library
             FP Utility Library
             FP Webpost Library
             Microsoft C Runtime Library
             Microsoft Controls Library
             Microsoft MFC 4.0 Library
             Microsoft MFC 4.0 OLE Library
             Microsoft OLE Automation
             Microsoft OLE Dialog Library
             Microsoft OLE Extension
             Microsoft OLE Library
             Microsoft OLE Portability Library
             Microsoft Portability Library
             Microsoft RichEdit Library

          Preferences
          -----------

             Embedding Preferences
             FrontPage Editor Preferences
             FrontPage Explorer Preferences
             FrontPage Preferences
             FrontPage Registry Emulation
             PPC Registration Database

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting the "Can not connect to FrontPage
Editor (or FrontPage Explorer)" error, rerun FrontPage Setup and
completely uninstall FrontPage. After you uninstall FrontPage, remove
the extensions and preferences files listed above. Reinstall FrontPage.

  4. Rebuild the Desktop by using one of the following methods:

        - Restart the computer while pressing the COMMAND+OPTION keys.

        - Insert the disk while pressing the COMMAND+OPTION keys (use this
method to rebuild the Desktop on a floppy disk only).

        - Press COMMAND+OPTION+ESC [or the tilde (~) character] to force quit
the Finder. Continue to press the COMMAND+OPTION keys while the
computer restarts and until you receive a message asking you if you
          want to Rebuild the Desktop.

  5. Increase the memory for the program.
