FP98: Error Clicking Normal Tab w/Tiled Shared Border, Main Page

SYMPTOMS

When you tile a shared border page, such as Top.htm, and the page that contains the shared border page (the main page), click the HTML tab to switch from Normal view, and then click the Normal tab, you receive the following error:

Windows 95:

fpeditor caused an invalid page fault in module Fpeditor.exe.

Windows NT:

an application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

fPeditor.exe exception: access violation (0xc0000005, Address: 0x004ce4b4


CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do all of the following in the order shown:

  1. In a FrontPage Web in FrontPage Explorer, click Shared Border on the tools menu.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings. In the Web Settings dialog box, click to select the "Show documents in hidden directories" check box.


  3. Open the page that contains the shared border (main page).


  4. Click in the shared border region of the main page.


  5. Open the shared border page (for example, open Top.htm). To do this, click open on the File menu, select the _Borders folder and then open the shared border page.


  6. Click Tile on the Window menu. The shared border page (for example, Top.htm) will be the active window.


  7. Click the HTML tab of the active window. Both windows show the HTML source.


  8. Click the Normal tab of the active window.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, in FrontPage follow these steps:

  1. Open the page that contains the shared border (main page).


  2. Open the shared border page.


  3. On the Window menu, click Tile.


  4. Click anywhere in the main page and then click the HTML tab.


  5. Click anywhere in the shared border page (top.htm) and then click the HTML tab.
