FP98: Error using Progressive JPEG for Button on Disk-Based Web

SYMPTOMS

When you preview a page that contains a hover button, it displays as a gray box. When you rest the mouse over the hover button, you see one of the following messages in the status bar:

Internet Explorer: 

   Exception: com.ms.securityExceptionEx[fphover.init]:
   cannot access file /C:/myweb/progressive.jpg.
Netscape Navigator: 

   Applet fphover can't start: exception: java.lang.NullPointerException.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if both of the following are true:

  • You are using a progressive JPEG for the image of your hover button.

-and-
  • Your Web is a disk-based Web.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods:

  • Publish your disk-based web to a server-based web.

-or-
  • Use a non-progressive JPEG or GIF image for the hover button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
