SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer, the Software Update Installed dialog box may be displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are running Internet Explorer in browser- only mode, or if there is an upgrade available on the Internet Explorer 4.0 Components Download page.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the Software Update Installed dialog box from appearing, use one of the following methods:

Upgrade Components

To upgrade to newer components from the Internet Explorer 4.0 Components Download page, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.

  3. Click "Add a component to Internet Explorer," click OK, and then click Yes.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Remove Registry Value

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To prevent the Software Update Installed dialog box from appearing, remove the "Version available" value from the following registry key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
      Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
