Cannot Access Secure Web Pages Using Proxy Server

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a proxy server (a server on a local area network that lets you connect to the Internet without using a modem) to connect to the Internet and you have configured Internet Explorer to use different port addresses for Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Secure (HTTPS) connections, Internet Explorer may use the port address specified for HTTP connections for both HTTP and Secure connections. Therefore, you may be unable to connect to secure (HTTPS://) Web pages.

In addition, when you attempt to access a secured Web page, you may receive the following error message:

Error #501 - Not implemented


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, configure Internet Explorer and the proxy server to use the same port address for both HTTP and Secure connections. Note that you must configure Internet Explorer on all computers that use the proxy server to connect to the Internet, even if the computers are not running Internet Explorer. To configure Internet Explorer to use the same port address for HTTP and Secure connections, follow these steps:

  1. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Options on the View menu.


  2. Click the Connection tab, and then click Settings in the Proxy Server area.


  3. Type a port address for HTTP and Secure connections.


  4. If one proxy server is used for all of the protocols, click the "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" check box to select it, and then click OK. Otherwise, click OK, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
