Error Message Downloading Mail with Outlook Express

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to download your mail with Outlook Express, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • An unknown error has occurred while attempting to receive mail. Please check your account settings, net connection, and TCP/IP configuration.
  • An attempt to allocate memory failed. The system is out of memory.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if there is not enough free disk space to download your mail.

RESOLUTION

Increase the amount of free space on your hard disk by removing any unnecessary files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Outlook Express 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
