SUMMARY

This article describes how to customize a folder with Internet Explorer and the Windows Desktop Update component installed.

MORE INFORMATION

To customize a folder with Internet Explorer and the Windows Desktop Update component installed, use the Customize This Folder wizard. The Customize This Folder wizard can help you with the following tasks:

  • Create or edit a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document
  • Choose a background picture
  • Remove customization

To customize a folder with the Customize This Folder wizard, use the appropriate method:

Create or Edit an HTML Document

To create or edit an HTML document, use the following steps:

  1. Open the folder you want to customize, and then click Customize This Folder on the View menu.

  2. Click "Create or edit an HTML document", and then click Next.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to create and edit an HTML document, save the file, and then quit your HTML editing program.

Choose a Background Picture

To choose a background picture, use the following steps:

  1. Open the folder you want to customize, and then click Customize This Folder on the View menu.

  2. Click Choose a Background Picture, and then click Next.

  3. Click the picture you want to use, or click Browse, browse to the picture you want to use and then click it.

  4. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Remove Customization

To remove a folder's customization, use the following steps:

  1. Open the folder you want to customize, and then click Customize This Folder on the View menu.

  2. Click Remove Customization, click Next, and then click Finish.

Customizing All Local Folders

To customize all your local folders at the same time, open the Windows\Web or Winnt\Web folder and follow the steps in the appropriate section earlier in this article.

Customizing Special Folders

The Customize This Folder wizard and Web View are not available for special folders (for example, Fonts, History, Downloaded Program Files, or Subscriptions folders).

Note: For the Temporary Internet Files folder, the Customize This Folder command is on the View menu and appears to work properly. However, your folder customizations are not displayed after you run the Customize This Folder wizard.

Windows 98 provides a default Web View template for Temporary Internet Files that explains what the folder is used for and how to clear its contents or adjust the settings. This default Web View template cannot be changed via the Customize this folder wizard.
