SYMPTOMS

If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 in a folder whose name is longer than 78 characters, the Internet Explorer icon is missing from the Start menu. If you are using Shell Integration, the shortcut is also missing from the Quick Launch toolbar.

CAUSE

The GRPCONV module (a component of Internet Explorer), which is responsible for creating the shortcuts, is limited to processing individual folder names of 80 characters or less.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

MORE INFORMATION

The GRPCONV module accesses folders of 80 characters or less (including the drive letter delimiter and the folder delimiter). If the folder name is too long, a truncated folder that contains the first 78 characters of the long file name is created in the same installation path. Any shortcuts point to this truncated folder, resulting in invalid shortcuts.
