Pasting Text into FrontPad Shows ASCII Characters

Last reviewed: September 29, 1997

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you copy text formatted in Rich Text Format (RTF) and paste it into FrontPad, odd characters in may be displayed in FrontPad.

This behavior is specific to the FrontPad program that is included as part of Internet Explorer 4.0; it does not occur in the full version of FrontPad.

CAUSE

The ability to convert Rich Text Format (.rtf) files is not included in this limited version of FrontPad. The characters you see are American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) character codes.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Copy and paste your text into a non-RTF text editor such as Notepad.

This strips all formatting from the text.

  2. Copy the text from Notepad and then paste it into FrontPad.

NOTE: Because Notepad strips all formatting from the text, it is necessary to reapply any appropriate formatting after you paste the text into FrontPad.
