Timeout Error Messages Downloading News Messages

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to read a news message while offline, you may receive timeout error messages or warnings, and the message may not open.

CAUSE

Outlook Express cannot properly process messages that have a period as the first character on any line in the message.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, switch to the Outlook Express Front Page, and then switch back to your news server.

NOTE: The message is not downloaded until you establish an online connection to your news server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows95 and Windows NT 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
