Unsubscribed Newsgroups Appear in Local File Clean Up

SYMPTOMS

When you unsubscibe from a newsgroup, the newsgroup may still appear in the "Local file(s) for" list in the Local File Clean Up dialog box.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Sublist.dat file is not properly updated after you unsubscribe from a newsgroup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Sublist.dat file for the news server that you want to update. To do so, use the following steps:

NOTE: After you perform the following steps, all newsgroups for this server are removed, and you may need to resubscribe to them.

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

2. In the Named box, type "sublist.dat" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.

3. Right-click the Sublist.dat file for the news server that you want to update, and then click Rename.

4. Type "sublist.old" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

5. Quit the Find tool.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The Sublist.dat file contains the list of subscribed news groups. When you unsubscribe from a newsgroup, the newsgroup is no longer listed in the folder list, however the newsgroup may appear in the Local file Clean Up list.
