SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

   MSN=_ssp_load secssp16.dll

Or, you may receive the following error messages:

   Cannot Find MSNSSP16.DLL

CAUSE

You receive these error messages if the Msnssp16.dll or Secssp16.dll file is missing, damaged, or an incorrect version of the file.

RESOLUTION

If you are not using The Microsoft Network (MSN) to connect to the Internet, you can either ignore the error message or remove the following line from the [SecurityProtocols] section of the Iexplore.ini file in the Windows folder:

   MSN=_ssp_load secssp16.dll

For information about using Notepad to edit the file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "editing" (without quotation marks), double- click "Unformated Text Files," (under Windows NT, click "Documents") and then double-click the "Using Notepad to write and edit text files" topic.

Or, search for multiple copies of the Msnssp16.dll and Secssp16.dll files and remove or rename them.

If you are using MSN to connect to the Internet, rename the Msnssp16.dll and Secssp16.dll files and reinstall Internet Explorer.

For information about renaming a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without quotation marks), double-click "Documents," and then double-click the "To change the name of a file or folder" topic.
