ACC97: Can't Use Back Button in IE3 If Started from Web Toolbar

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

When you explore a Web page that you select from the Web toolbar in Microsoft Access 97, the Back button is enabled in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0, but nothing happens when you click it.

CAUSE

If you use the Web toolbar in Microsoft Access 97 to explore a Web page, but you do not have a database or a database object open, there is no current database to reference when it is time to move back. Therefore, clicking the Back button does not do anything.

RESOLUTION

Make sure there is a database open when you start Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Web toolbar in Microsoft Access. Then when you click the Back button, there will be an open database to return to.

NOTE: In some circumstances, such as when you select or type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Address box of the Web toolbar, you must have an object open in your database first. For example, open a table, a form, or a module, and then type a URL in the Address box to start Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Back button will work as expected.

MORE INFORMATION

The expected behavior when you click the Back button in Microsoft Internet Explorer is for that program to close, and for the focus to return to Microsoft Access 97.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

The following example assumes that you have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 installed on your computer, and that you have a Start Page configured on the Navigation tab of the Options dialog box.

1. Start Microsoft Access 97 and click Cancel, so that there is no database

   open.

2. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Web to display the

   Web toolbar.

3. Click the Start Page button on the Web toolbar. Microsoft Internet

   Explorer starts and displays your Start Page.

4. In Microsoft Internet Explorer click the Back button, or on the Go

   menu, click Back. Note that nothing happens.
