Reply To Author Causes Internet News to Stop

Last reviewed: September 4, 1997
Article ID: Q154100
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Mail and News version 1.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to reply to the author of a newsgroup posting, Internet News may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true

  • You have installed only Internet News (not Internet Mail).
  • You are connected to the Internet newsgroup using Dial-Up Networking.
  • You are configured to use Microsoft Exchange Server over a local area network (LAN).

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, create a separate profile in Microsoft Exchange that does not contain your Microsoft Exchange Server client.

MORE INFORMATION

When you attempt to reply to an author, the messaging application programming interface (MAPI) component of Microsoft Windows 95 attempts to resolve your Microsoft Exchange Server name from your Internet name server before trying the local name server. This may cause your computer to stop responding for over five minutes.
