BUG: Creating/Deleting Web Projects Results in IIS Hanging

Last reviewed: December 9, 1997
Article ID: Q165808
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual InterDev, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

The available virtual memory on a Web server running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and the FrontPage 97 server extenders decreases over time as Web projects are created and deleted through Visual InterDev. When the server runs out of virtual memory, Microsoft IIS (INETINFO.EXE) may crash or hang during the creation or deletion of a Web project.

CAUSE

If the Microsoft Internet Information Server process terminates abnormally (crash), this could be due to a low virtual memory condition caused by a memory leak in the FrontPage 97 Server extensions.

RESOLUTION

Virtual memory can be released by stopping all Microsoft IIS services (WWW, FTP, and GOPHER) and restarting them.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that Visual InterDev projects are created and accessed via FrontPage 97 extensions. These extensions ship with Visual InterDev.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create or delete a Web project using Visual InterDev on a Microsoft Internet Information Server running the FrontPage server extensions.

  2. Repeat step 1 multiple times until the server exhausts its virtual memory.
