ACC97: Issues When You Install MS Access 95 After MS Access 97

This article discusses the issues you may encounter when you install Microsoft Access 7.0 after you install Microsoft Access 97, and how to resolve them.

Note that these issues also apply if Microsoft Access 7.0 is already installed on your computer, and you re-run Setup with the /y command-line option.

When you install Microsoft Access 7.0 or if you run Microsoft Access 7.0 Setup with the /y command-line option after you install Microsoft Access 97, some entries in the Windows registry that are shared by both versions of Microsoft Access are changed. You may encounter the following issues:


Microsoft Access 7.0 Calendar Control is Registered

Reregister the Microsoft Access 97 Calendar control to make it available for use by both versions of Microsoft Access:
  1. Start Microsoft Access 97 and open any database.


  2. On the Tools menu, click ActiveX Controls.


  3. In the ActiveX Controls dialog box, click Register.


  4. In the Add ActiveX Control dialog box, browse the Windows\System folder for Mscal.ocx, and then click Open.


  5. Note that Calendar Control 8.0 appears in the Available Controls box. This is the correct control to use in both Microsoft Access 7.0 and 97.


  6. Click Close in the ActiveX Control dialog box.


No Shortcut or Icon for Microsoft Access 97

You must create a shortcut or icon for Microsoft Access 97.

For Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT version 4.0:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar.


  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab in the Taskbar Properties dialog box.


  3. Click Add.


  4. In the Create Shortcut dialog box, click Browse. Locate the Microsoft Access 97 program Msaccess.exe, which is installed by default in \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office. Click Open.


  5. Click Next in the Create Shortcut dialog box.


  6. In the Select Program Folder dialog box, select a folder in which to place the shortcut, or click New Folder to create a new one. Click Next.


  7. In the "Select a Title for the Program" dialog box, type Microsoft Access 97, and then click Finish.


For Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51:
  1. In Program Manager, open the Program Group in which you want to create the Microsoft Access 97 icon.


  2. On the File menu, click New.


  3. In the New Program Object dialog box, click Program Item, and then click OK.


  4. In the Program Item Properties dialog box, type Microsoft Access 97 in the Description box.


  5. Click the Browse button to locate the Microsoft Access 97 executable file Msaccess.exe, which is installed by default in \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office. Click OK.


  6. Click OK to close the Program Item Properties dialog box.


.MDB Files Are Associated with Microsoft Access 7.0

If you double-click a Microsoft Access 97 database file, it will open in Microsoft Access 7.0. When that happens, you receive the following error messages:
Invalid database Object Couldn't create storage space for VBA module

The errors occur because Microsoft Access 97 database files are not backward compatible with Microsoft Access 7.0.

Microsoft Access 97 is a self-registering application; just start and then quit Microsoft Access 97, and all .mdb files will be automatically associated with the new version. This also includes database files from earlier versions of Microsoft Access, so if you double-click one of those files, Microsoft Access 97 starts and prompts you to Convert or Open the database.

"Can't Load <Driver File Name>" Error During Setup

You may receive the following error message near the end of Setup:
Can't load <Driver File Name> (error code=1157) The configuration of the ODBC Microsoft <Driver Name> driver failed.

When you click OK, you see a message that Setup was not completed successfully.

This error occurs when you install a Paradox, dBASE, FoxPro, Text, or Excel driver for Microsoft Access 7.0, but you do not have the corresponding driver installed for Microsoft Access 97.

Office 95 Templates Tab in New Database Dialog Box

If you run Microsoft Access 7.0 Setup with the /y command-line option, you may see this extra tab in the New dialog box when you click New Database on the File menu.

You can still use the database templates listed on the Office 95 Templates tab in Microsoft Access 97. Actually, the database templates on that tab are the same ones listed on the Databases tab.

If you want to remove the Office 95 Templates tab, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Explorer in Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT version 4.0, or File Manager in Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51.


  2. Browse to the \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder.


  3. Delete the Office 95 Templates shortcut.


  4. Start Microsoft Access 97.


  5. Click Database Wizard in the opening dialog box. Note that the Office 95 Templates tab is gone.
