PRB: Installing MDAC/ADO/RDS on NT Requires Admin Privileges

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Data Access Components, version 1.5
• ActiveX Data Objects (ADO)

SYMPTOMS

When installing the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) standalone installation program, or when manually trying to install either ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) or the Remote Data Service (RDS) on a Windows NT system, you need to have Administrator privileges.

CAUSE

There are several components that could cause difficulties when trying to install on Windows NT.

These components are listed below:

• OLE Automation (Oleaut32.dll, Olepro32.dll, Asycfilt.dll, and Stdole2.tlb), which is required by MDAC components including OLE DB, ADO, and RDS.

  To install the updated OLE Automation files, whether by the MDAC standalone, Visual Basic 5.0 AppWizard distribution, or the OLE Automation patch described in the Knowledge Base article below, you must have Administrator privileges.

• Visual C++ Run Time Library (Msvcrt.dll) may also require administrator privileges to update. Otherwise you see a dialog box labeled "Copy Error" and the following message:

        An Error has Occurred Copying MSVCRT.DLL
  

        Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change
        it and insert 'Microsoft Data Access Components 1.5' in the
        drive you specify.
  

        Copy files from:
        C:\TEMP\IXP000.TMP
  

  - Other DLLs that require Administrator privileges in order to install

      correctly are listed below:
  

        Msado10.dll  // ADO
        Msadce.dll   // RDS
        Msdadc.dll   // OLE DB
  
  

RESOLUTION

Install using the MDAC Standalone EXE with Administrator privileges.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
