SYMPTOMS

When you use the Use Numeric Keypad As Mouse feature of the IntelliType software, the mouse pointer disappears when you start an application.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when "No mouse or other pointing device" is selected in the Mouse field in Windows Setup, or when the computer does not have a serial input device installed.

RESOLUTION

A serial input device (such as an embedded or external mouse) must be installed with an appropriate Windows driver and be functioning properly before you can use the keypad as a mouse.

If you do not have a mouse to install, you can install the Genius serial mouse driver on COM1 or COM2 because the Genius driver initializes without checking to see if a mouse is actually present. To install the Genius serial mouse driver, follow these steps:

1. In Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup icon in the Main

   program group.

2. In the Mouse box, select either Genius Serial Mouse On COM1 or
Genius Serial Mouse On COM2 and then follow the instructions on
   the screen.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When the mouse pointer disappears, it is still active even though you cannot see it. You can use the Sonar feature (located on the Pointer Activity tab) to locate the mouse pointer.
