The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Site Server, version 2.0

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run a grantuser command on a project with a large Access Control List (ACL), you get the following 1344 error message:

No more memory is available for security information updates.

CAUSE

This is a limitation of the command line interface, which only allows a 4- KB buffer or approximately 11 user permissions per project.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

There are two workarounds:

Method 1 1. Start Regedit32.exe. 2. Select Security and Permissions. 3. Add more than 11 user permissions.

Method 2 1. Create a local group for each project. 2. Add the users to the project group. 3. Run Grantuser.exe to add the group to the project.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0 and Site Server version 2.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Site Server 2.0 Service Pack 1. For information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):

   S E R V P A C K

MORE INFORMATION

The buffer for the command line interface has been increased to 64 KB, which will allow approximately 176 user permissions per project.
