IMS: NTFS Requirement for Mail Store

Last reviewed: February 3, 1998
Article ID: Q160081
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

There is no command line tool to set the maximum Inbound connections in SMTP. However, there is a command line tool to set the maximum outbound connections.

CAUSE

During Setup, you must specify an NTFS-based directory for MailRoot, but later on Setup states that you do not need NTFS on your remote mail store. Under MailRoot Directory you set up Queue, Badmail, Pickup, and Drop.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  • After you complete Setup, go through the SMTP Administrator GUI and set up a directory for mailbox. You can set it up locally or on a remote share, regardless of name.

NOTE: The directory can be created on either NTFS or file allocation table (FAT) partitions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
