  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the anonymous account to access the Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) News Server after installing it on a backup domain controller (BDC), you receive a "480 logon required" message, even though you have anonymous access enabled. Note that many other services (for example, the WWW) may have this same problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following:

  • Create a domain user account with default permissions in the domain\users groups, and set the anonymous user as the user ID.

    -or-

  • Install MCIS News Server on a primary domain controller (PDC) or another computer running Windows NT Server that is not a BDC.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in MCIS News Server version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
