Error in Setup Installing Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint and ODBC

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office for Windows, if you attempt to install Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint, Setup fails if ODBC is selected and Microsoft Word is not also installed.

CAUSE

In Office Setup, any combination of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint with ODBC selected causes the object ID error to occur.

WORKAROUND

To successfully install Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint, you should run Setup again. In the Options dialog box, select the same options as before, and then clear the ODBC option or select the Word option.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. Restart your computer and start the Office Setup program.



2. Enter and confirm a valid user name.



3. Accept defaults in the Setup Directory dialog boxes.



4. Choose Custom Install.



5. In the first Options dialog box, clear Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, MOM, Spelling, Tools, Fonts. (This leaves only Microsoft Excel and the Converters options selected).



6. Continue Setup, accepting all default responses.
