Error Inserting Picture as Object Using From File

ID: Q133347

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In the programs listed above, if you insert an object using the From File button, and you select a clipart or .PCS picture file, you receive one of the following error messages:

Microsoft Word

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

Microsoft Excel

Cannot insert object
Note that in Microsoft PowerPoint, when you select the From File option in the Insert Object dialog box, clipart and .PCS picture files do not appear. Only files that are associated with an application appear in the list of available files to insert.

CAUSE

The From File button in the Object dialog box inserts the contents of a selected file into your document so that you can edit the object later using the application that created the source file. Because the clipart and .PCS picture files that are shipped with Microsoft Office are not associated with an application, you cannot use this button to insert one of these picture files into your document.

Note that if you use the Create From File tab in the Object dialog box to insert a picture file in a document in a Microsoft Windows Office application, a Package object containing a copy of the picture file is inserted in your document, instead of the picture itself.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods.

Method 1

To insert a picture into your document, do the following:
  1. Click the document where you want the picture to appear.

  2. On the Insert menu, choose Picture.

  3. Select the picture you want to insert, and choose Insert.

Method 2

To insert a picture as an object in your document, do the following:
  1. Click the document where you want the picture to appear.

  2. On the Insert menu, clcik Object. Under Create, select the new option. From the list of objects, select Microsoft Clipart Gallery, and click OK.

  3. In the Microsoft Clipart Gallery dialog box, select the picture that you want to insert in your document, and choose OK.

NOTE: Method 2 does not apply to Microsoft Excel 98 Mactintosh Edition or Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition.
