FP: Can't Use Proofing Tools or Text Converters

Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q160226
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows
  • Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you uninstall FrontPage, Office 95, or Office 97, the proofing tools and text converters of the remaining programs may not work as expected.

CAUSE

Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft Office share the following components:

  • Proofing Tools (Spelling Checker, Thesaurus)
  • Text Converters

If FrontPage is installed after Office 95, FrontPage will use the installed proofing tools. If you then uninstall Office 95, the proofing tools will be removed and will therefore be unavailable in FrontPage.

If FrontPage is installed over Office 95, FrontPage will upgrade the existing text converters. If you then uninstall FrontPage 97, the Msconv97.dll file will be removed and therefore the remaining text converters will not function.

If FrontPage is installed after Office 97, and you then uninstall Office 97, the custom dictionary will be removed and will therefore be unavailable to the spelling checker.

WORKAROUND

To work around these problems, reinstall FrontPage 97 or the Proofing Tools and Converters components of Office.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in FrontPage for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
