OFF95: Generic Icons with Question Mark Displayed in New Dialog

ID: Q134269

SYMPTOMS

When you open the New dialog box by clicking New on the File menu in a Microsoft Office application or by clicking the Start A New Document button on the Office toolbar, the icons that appear in this dialog box may display a generic icon with a question mark.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you perform a Run From Network Server or Run From CD installation of Microsoft Office under Windows NT version 3.51. This behavior occurs because Microsoft Office cannot display the correct icon for an item that is located on a network drive or CD.

When you perform a Run From Network Server or Run From CD installation of Microsoft Office, the Office template files are not copied to your local hard disk. Instead, they are accessed from the network server or CD. Because of this behavior, the template files in the New dialog box are displayed using a generic icon with a question mark, because the icon referenced on the network server cannot be displayed.

The icons on the Binders tab may be displayed using the correct icon because the Binder application is copied to your local hard disk during a Run From Network Server or Run From CD installation.

Note that this behavior does not affect the functionality of the New dialog box, and does not prevent you from creating new documents using the Microsoft Office templates.

This problem does not occur under Windows 95.
