SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office for Windows 95, the Setup program does not automatically create a shortcut to Microsoft Query on the Start menu.

WORKAROUND

To access Microsoft Query directly from the Start menu, do the following:

  1. On the Windows Taskbar, click Start. Click Settings, and then click Taskbar.

  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab. Click Advanced.

Windows Explorer is activated, and the "Start Menu\Programs" folder is active.

  3. Double-click the Programs folder. On the File menu, click New, and then click Shortcut.

  4. Click the browse button and point to the Microsoft Query executable file. In a local installation of Microsoft Office 95, the path to the file may be something similar to the following:
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Msquery\Msqry32.exe"
Note that the quotation marks are required because the folder names contain spaces.

NOTE: If you installed Microsoft Office from a shared location on a network server, check with your network administrator for the correct Command Line syntax for a Microsoft Query shortcut.

  5. Click Next once you have the correct Command Line syntax for Microsoft Query. Type a name for the shortcut, for example "Microsoft Query" (without the quotation marks). Click Finish.

  6. In Windows Explorer, click Close on the File menu. In the Taskbar Properties dialog box, click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design, because Microsoft Query is a second-tier application.
