IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SUMMARY

Chapter 11 of the "Microsoft Office for Windows 95 Resource Kit" states that a sample System Policy template file is included on the Resource Kit compact disc. This information is incorrect: the System Policy template is not included in the Resource Kit.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 95 system policies are used to restrict or predefine the desktop and network configuration on each client computer, including restricting or optimizing Office features and capabilities. System policies are defined by the administrator in a central network location, and then Windows 95 client computers automatically use these system policies to update or modify local registry settings.

For details on how to implement system policies, see Chapter 15, "User Profiles and System Policies," in the "Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit." For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

You can edit the registry using System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) or Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Check with your network administrator before you make any changes to the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) is available on the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the Admin\Apptools\Poledit folder. Use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to install System Policy Editor.
