SYMPTOMS

When you add a button to a toolbar on the Office Shortcut Bar, the button may be added on top of the toolbar name so that it covers the text on the toolbar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you create a toolbar with a very long name when your Office Shortcut Bar is docked, (that is, positioned against one of the edges of your computer screen). When you create a new, blank toolbar, you can create a name with approximately 200 characters. When you create a toolbar from an existing folder, the folder name becomes the name for the new toolbar.

When you add a button to a toolbar, the button is normally added at the end of the toolbar name. However, if you create a toolbar with a very long name (either from an existing folder with a very long name, or as a new, blank toolbar with a very long name), the button does not fit on the toolbar next to the toolbar name. Instead, the button is added on top of the toolbar name.

Note that when the Office Shortcut Bar is not docked, the buttons on a toolbar with a long name do not appear on top of the toolbar name; however, a long toolbar name may appear cut off by additional toolbars on the Office Shortcut Bar.

The number of characters that are displayed on a toolbar with a long name depends on the resolution and the font size you are using for your display in Windows.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods:

Method 1: When you create a toolbar, give the toolbar a relatively short

          name so that buttons that you add to the toolbar are not added on
          top of the toolbar name.

Method 2: Rename a toolbar that has a long name. To do this, follow these

          steps:

          a. Create a new toolbar with the shorter name you want.

          b. Hold down the ALT key, and then drag each button from the old
             toolbar with the long name to the new toolbar with the shorter
             name.

          c. If you no longer need the old toolbar with the long name, you
             can delete this toolbar. To do this, click the Toolbars tab in
             the Customize dialog box, select the old toolbar, and click
             Delete.
