IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

For information about backing up your Windows 95 registry files, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

SUMMARY

This article explains how to completely remove Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) Enterprise Update from your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Other software programs may use the same files and registry keys that Office 97 creates. Deleting these registry keys may cause other programs that use the keys to fail to function properly. When this occurs, reinstall the programs.

When following the steps listed in this article, it is important to note that all of the folders, files and registry keys/values listed may not be present on your computer. If you encounter this situation, simply proceed to the next file, folder or registry key/value.

To remove Office 97 SR-1 Enterprise Update from your computer, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove. If you installed Office from a Compact Disc, you are prompted to insert the first disc.

If a dialog box appears and notifies you that programs are running, quit the programs, and then click OK.

  3. In the Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Remove All.

  4. When you are prompted to remove shared components, click Remove All.

If you are prompted to restart the computer after Setup is completed, do so.

  5. In Windows Explorer, delete the following folders:

            Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
            Program Files\Common Files\ODBC
            Program Files\Microsoft Office
            Windows\Temp\Vbe
            Windows\Temp\Excel8.0

NOTE: Deleting the Program Files\Microsoft Office folder also deletes the Xlstart and Templates folders which could contain personal or custom files. Ensure that all personal or custom files are removed from these folders before deleting them. Additionally, two other folders that may contain personal or custom files are not listed above. They are the My Documents and Windows\Favorites folder. Once personal or custom files have been removed from these folders, they may also be safely removed. These two folders will not cause problems with subsequent installations of Office 97 if left on the computer.

  6. In Windows Explorer, delete the following files in the folders below. Do not delete the folders.

A utility that automates this process is also available.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Software Library:
    ~ Eraser97.exe

is optional. These fonts can be used by other programs that make use
of Windows TrueType fonts and will not cause problems with subsequent
installations of Office 97 if left on the computer.

           Rec7042.mdb

NOTE: The file name listed above in the Windows\Temp folder may vary
with each install of Office 97 SR-1. Delete any files in this folder
where the first three characters of the filename are "Rec" (without
the quotes) followed by four numbers and where the file extension is
         ".mdb" (without the quotes).

  8. On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

  9. Select the following key in the registry:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0

With the key selected, click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted whether to delete this key, click Yes.

  10. Repeat the previous step (step 8) to delete the following registry keys:

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{2DF8D04C-5BFA-101B-
           00AA0044DE52}\2.0

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\3.5

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VBA

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Access Runtime

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSACCESS80

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\mso97.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSO97RT

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vba332.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbacv10.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbacv20.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbaen32.olb

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbar332.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbe.dll

           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\vbeext1.olb

           HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0

           HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VBA

  11. Select the following key in the registry:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
           \SharedDLLs

Delete values in the registry key that point to the original Office 97 SR-1 installation point. For example, if you install from the D: drive, delete only values in the key that point the D: drive letter. Do not delete the entire key or other values in the key.
