ID: Q166303

The information in this article applies to:

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program, the Office Startup shortcut may not be installed in the Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all of the following conditions are true:

This problem occurs because the "OfficeBin" value is not removed from the following registry key

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\InstallRoot

when you run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program and click Remove All.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

To work around this problem, use the following steps:

  1. Run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program and click Remove All in the first maintenance mode dialog box that appears.

  2. On the Start menu, click Run. Type regedit and click OK.

  3. Remove the "OfficeBin" value from the following registry key:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\InstallRoot

  4. Run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program to reinstall Office.

After you install Office, the Office Startup shortcut is installed in the Windows Startup folder.

NOTE: The Office Startup shortcut is not installed if you fail to remove Office. For example, if you installed Microsoft Office 97, removed the registry value in step 2, and then clicked Reinstall during a maintenance mode installation, the Office Startup shortcut is not installed.
