OFF98: Editing Chart Object Causes Type 2 Error

SYMPTOMS

When you try to edit a chart object in a Microsoft Office 98 program other than Microsoft Excel 98 by using the Chart Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

   The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because
   an error of type 2 occurred.
   You should save your work in the other open applications and restart
   the computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You create a chart with error bars in Microsoft Excel.

        -and-
    
  • You drag the chart from Microsoft Excel to another Office 98 program (for example, Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint).

        -and-
    
  • You double-click the Microsoft Excel chart object in another Office program to edit the object.

        -and-
    
  • You click the Chart Wizard tool and change the chart type in the Chart Wizard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the Excel chart object.

  2. Click the Chart Wizard tool.

  3. Click Next to proceed to step 2 in the Chart Wizard.

  4. Click Back to return to step 1. Change the chart type, and then click Next.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
