Article ID: Q182704
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you press and hold CONTROL and press the mouse button in any of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs, the shortcut menu that you expect may not appear. Instead, the program temporarily loses focus and a shortcut menu with a single item appears.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have installed Apple Data Detectors on your computer.

WORKAROUND

The workaround to use depends on the version of Apple Data Detectors that you are using. To work around this problem, determine the version of Apple Data Detectors that you are using, and then use the appropriate method.

To determine the version of Apple Data Detectors that you are using, follow these steps:

  1. Open the System Folder:Extensions folder on your hard disk.

  2. Click to select the Apple Data Detectors folder.

  3. On the File menu, click Get Info.

The version number is listed in the Info window.

Method 1: Version 1.0.2 or Later

To work around the problem, click "Turn off Contextual Menus in <program name>" on the Help menu where <program name> is the name of the Office program that you are using. This allows you to use shortcut menus in the program but makes the functionality of the Apple Data Detectors software unavailable in the program.

Method 2: Version 1.0.1 or Earlier

To work around the problem, disable the Contextual Menu Enabler extension. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Point to Control Panels on the Apple menu, and then click Extensions Manager.

  2. Click to clear the Contextual Menu Enabler check box.

  3. Click Restart.

NOTE: This makes the functionality of the Apple Data Detectors software unavailable in all of your programs.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of the programs listed at the beginning of this article.
