The Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition Value Pack includes a collection of workbooks, add-ins, and templates, collectively known as "Default Save" files, that you can use to set the default save format in each of the programs listed at the beginning of this article.

This article explains how to install and use Default Save files in the Office 98 programs.

What Default Save Files are Available?

The following Default Save files are available in the Value Pack:Administration Tools:Default Save folder on the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition compact disc:

   Default Save As Excel 4.0
   Default Save As Excel 5.0
   Default Save As Excel 98
   Default Save As Excel 98 & 5.0
   Default Save As PowerPoint 3
   Default Save As PowerPoint 4
   Default Save As PowerPoint 98
   Default Save As Word 5.1
   Default Save As Word 6
   Default Save As Word 98

Installing the Default Save Files

To install a Default Save file, follow these steps:

1. Drag the Default Save file you want to use from the Default Save folder to the Desktop.

2. Use the Finder to open the appropriate Startup folder on your hard disk:

         Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:Excel
         Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:PowerPoint
         Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:Word
   

3. Drag the Default Save file from the Desktop to the Startup folder for Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Microsoft Word.

Installing Default Save Files in an Administrative Installation

If you perform an administrative installation of Microsoft Office 98, you can automatically set default save formats for your users by dragging the Default Save files from the Microsoft Office 98 compact disc to the appropriate Startup folders on the network server.

You can include Default Save files in an administrative installation of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition by following these steps:

1. Perform the administrative installation of Microsoft Office 98 by dragging the Microsoft Office 98 folder from the compact disc to the network server or by running the Microsoft Office Installer program and specifying a folder on the network server as the destination folder.

2. Drag the appropriate Default Save files from the Microsoft Office 98 compact disc to the appropriate Startup folders on the network server.

NOTE: If a user installs Microsoft Office 98 by running the Microsoft Office Installer program, the Default Save files are not installed on the workstation computer. If this occurs, you must provide the user with manual instructions for installing the Default Save files.

Using Default Save Files

After you install Default Save files and you then start a program and save a file, the file is saved by default in the format that is specified by the Default Save file in the Startup folder for the program you are using. Note that you can override the default format by selecting a different format in the Save As dialog box.
