SYMPTOMS

If you try to insert an Equation Editor object into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, you may receive the following error

Sorry, a system error occurred. "Microsoft Excel" error type 11
and your computer may hang (stop responding). Your only option is to restart the computer.

CAUSE

You may receive the this error message if the following conditions exist:

RESOLUTION

If the Microsoft OLE Extension is missing from your computer, run the Microsoft Office Setup program and choose the Reinstall option to replace the missing file.

If the Microsoft OLE Extension is not in the Extensions folder, but it is somewhere else on your hard disk, move it to the Extensions folder and then restart your computer.

Note, if the Microsoft OLE Extension is in the Extensions folder, this problem may arise from an extension conflict. In this case, use Extensions Manager to disable all unnecessary extensions to try and isolate the conflict.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft OLE extension is installed by default into your System Folder:Extensions folder when you run the Setup program for either Microsoft Office for the Power Macintosh or Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh. If this extension is removed from the Extensions folder, either manually or through Extensions Manager, Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh will start and function as designed. But, because the Microsoft OLE extension controls some of the OLE functionality, you may experience other problems as well when you try to use any of the shared programs installed by Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.

For additional information on problems with shared applications on the Macintosh, please see the following article(s)in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
